Juno's Teaching Philosophy

My passion for teaching is rooted in my personal experiences growing up in rural Manitoba, where I faced a lack of resources and support in my schooling. Along with this I also experienced discrimination from my peers and teachers due to a cultural isolation that resulted in a lack of critical education and diversity exposure. These early challenges inspired me to pursue education as a way to create more inclusive and supportive environments for students. I am deeply committed to ensuring that all students, particularly those from marginalized communities, feel valued and empowered in the classroom. Through my work as the Resource Coordinator for Queer McGill and my community outreach efforts, I have learned the importance of advocacy, support, and active engagement in creating spaces where students can thrive. My teaching philosophy is strongly influenced by constructivist principles, which emphasize that students learn best when they actively engage in the learning process. I believe in fostering a classroom where inquiry, collaboration, and critical thinking are central to the learning experience. I also draw inspiration from media studies and critical pedagogy, incorporating these into my teaching to encourage students to analyze and challenge the world around them. Education, for me, is about developing the tools to think critically, communicate effectively, and engage meaningfully with diverse perspectives. In practice, I focus on creating an interactive, student-centered classroom where learning is collaborative and experiential. I encourage students to ask questions, share ideas, and make connections between the material and their own lives. I integrate media analysis into lessons, helping students critically examine texts and media through a variety of lenses. By creating a safe and inclusive classroom environment, I aim to ensure that all students have the support they need to succeed. My goal is to inspire students to become thoughtful, critical, and compassionate individuals both inside and outside the classroom.
